🚨PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT🚨
As someone who works as a Collaboration Manager in this space, I need to say something.
Because lately, the TL has become lazy. Every time a floor gets nuked, sentiment turns, or a project underperforms, the same BS accusations that start flying.
“Shady CMs”
“Greedy influencers”
“KOL dumpers”
“Extractors”
Bad actors DO exist (welcome to literally every industry)
Some of you fundamentally misunderstand how this side of the space actually works.
So let’s clear a few things up.
First: not all CMs are the same.
Some of us have spent years building reputations, relationships, and communities through actual professionalism, consistency, and trust. This isn’t random DMing and posting emojis in Discord.
This is business development
Relationship management
Community distribution
Brand representation
Negotiation
Reputation risk
It is WORK.
Now let’s talk about compensation.
INBOUND collaboration management:
A founder/project comes to a CM because they want access to that CM’s network, community, or distribution.
Part of that arrangement may include whitelist spots as compensation.
1 spot. 2 spots. Whatever was agreed.
That is not “shady.”
That is compensation.
A CM is creating opportunity for their community and for themselves.
That’s how employment works.
If someone negotiates a wage plus access allocation as part of their agreement?
Good. They should.
Now OUTBOUND collaboration management:
This is even more work.
A CM actively sources partnerships, opens doors, handles outreach, closes relationships, manages expectations, coordinates execution.
Compensation here can look like:
• pre-mint payment
• weekly/monthly retainers
• post-mint payment
• NFT allocation
• hybrid structures
And again:
THAT.
IS.
PAYMENT.
You are not entitled to someone’s labor for free because this industry likes pretending “community” means unpaid work.
Now, an important distinction.
If someone is handed 100 NFTs and immediately dumps them into bids?
That’s a separate issue.
That’s not “all CMs are corrupt.”
That’s either:
poor contract structure
poor founder judgment
poor CM judgement
individual bad behavior
Founders should absolutely protect against destructive distribution agreements.
That’s called competency
And let’s talk about the obsession with blaming KOLs / influencers for every floor collapse.
Some of the people you’re accusing make more from a single Twitter post than your NFT is worth.
They are not panic dumping your NFT for lunch money.
Sometimes floors die because:
• supply was too large
• pricing was wrong
• demand was manufactured
• utility was weak
• post-mint execution failed
• incompetent founders
• terrible marketing
Not because someone with 40k followers sold a few assets. Web3 desperately needs to stop turning every market failure into a witch hunt.
Critique bad actors.
Absolutely.
But blanket accusations against entire professions because you’re emotional about price action?
