Mikhail Tal, genius on and off the board An anecdote that illustrates Tal's wit and sense of humor. During the closing ceremony of the Leipzig Olympiad (1960), Bobby Fischer had prepared a joke for Tal, who was then World Champion. Bobby claimed he'd been studying palmistry and grabbed Misha's hand: "I see that you will soon loose your title to a young American", he forecasted. Tal immediately turned to Lombardi and said: "Congratulations, Bill". Everybody bursted in laughter. 📸 Alexander Koblencs, Mikhail Tal, William Lombardy and Bobby Fischer. #chess #chesslegends

A zillion stars. Looking forward to the @bluenoterecords Classic reissue next week to replace my childhood '70s pressing that I basically wore out. Coda: If photos I'm seeing online are actually the new reissue, then BN has corrected the misspelling of Bob Cranshaw on the cover.

John Coltrane draws a picture illustrating the mathematics of music. Physicist and saxophonist Stephon Alexander has argued in his many public lectures and his book The Jazz of Physics that Albert Einstein and John Coltrane had quite a lot in common.

I’ve seen multiple people in my mentions talk about wanting to sign up for the PDGA. I recently just hit 4K followers and want to hook some people up! I’m going to select a few random people that retweet this and hook them up with a membership for 2022!!

@Mark_Stryker Mark, I discovered this album in the Blue Note Detroit playlist that you curated. It's fantastic! (this album, but the whole playlist, too!)

1. Just to add a bit of context to this reissue. I have a chapter in "Jazz from Detroit" about this band and the Strata Corp., the self-determination company launched by Kenny Cox and Charles Moore.
Blue Note Records@bluenoterecords

Recorded in 1968, "Introducing Kenny Cox and The Contemporary Jazz Quintet" was the debut album by this under-recognized Detroit band led by pianist Kenny Cox with trumpeter Charles Moore, tenor saxophonist Leon Henderson, bassist Ron Brooks & drummer Danny Spencer.

Another Tony party (as a good respite to the Tory party for a minute!). What’s your favourite Tony Williams!? Near impossible for me but Michael Mantler’s Movies album would be way high, as would the seldom celebrated “Ego” - Lifetime and percussion ensemble. #tonywilliams

The brilliant drummer #TonyWilliams was born on this day in 1945. Tony made his debut as a leader on Blue Note in the mid-1960s with 2 adventurous albums—"Life Time" & "Spring"—and returned to the label in 1985 for a run of magnificent quintet albums: bluenote.com/artist/anthony…
