@billmeltzer I get the argument that if he doesn’t play well down the stretch that the Flyers don’t make the playoffs. However that argument ignores the converse: if he played better & picks up points before the break, maybe having to sprint to the finish isn’t necessary.

Samuel Ersson has had two 6+ week stretches the last two seasons where he's played very well. Not just "a start here and there" like his critics say. His real problem has been groin injuries and very slow returns to form after those injuries. Does he need to stay healthier and avoid long down stretches? Absolutely yes. But is he a "legit NHL goalie"? Also yes. Raw numbers are rarely the full story.

@JayOnSC @TSN_Sports In the amount of time he said those words, he could have simply just said “yes” to the teams asking to interview Cassidy and then not have to speak to it at all and you know, focus on the playoffs.

@charlieo_conn Every time they showed UPL after the goal, he looked like he was responsible for puppies disappearing from Earth. Gotta be amazed at goalies. Toughest position in sports.

UPL just has to make that save. Damn. Habs are getting smiled on by the hockey gods quite a lot this postseason.

@LBWeiner @avappleyard @NHLFlyers @jasonmyrt Probably in time...this melts away. The issue is that the speed playoff hockey showed the league that it is really easy to close down on Matvei at our blueline (thwarting Flyers breakouts). If a switch back to LW allows 39 not to be scratched b/c of this, move him back.

@avappleyard @NHLFlyers @jasonmyrt I thought that segment was both a little funny and insightful in that here’s a former player basically saying everyone is overthinking this whole off-wing thing and he found it helpful later in his career to play the off-wing.

@billmeltzer @afern_alex This is Vladar’s 3rd team, so it clearly takes time, and for. I wouldn’t be upset if Ersson is still here, just not as bullish on his upside beyond a good backup, and look, there’s only 32 NHL backup goalie positions in the world, it still makes him pretty elite.

@LBWeiner @afern_alex Actually, Ersson-- WJC starter, Rookie of the Year in Sweden, quicker initial NHL spell of success -- had the more impressive early pedigree. A lot of injury, too hot and cold since. But still of typical age a goalie figures it out in NHL.

@billmeltzer @afern_alex I get what your saying, but there is a difference between the two. Recall that when Vladar was signed, much of the discussion was about how he was used to protect Wolf against the best of the west, and he performed well in that role. Ersson doesn’t quite have that pedigree.

@jasonmyrt Great interview…I thought Danny’s off wing take was sort of funny, but mostly insightful in really just expressing everyone is overthinking the whole thing by going so far as to say he played off wing and thought it helped him in his later years.

@billmeltzer @afern_alex If he goes, I won’t be sad, if he stays, I won’t be mad. I haven’t seen anything in his game that makes me think he’ll be anything more than a 2. If Vladar gets hurt, it doesn’t matter who the 2 is, this team likely would be up the creek without a paddle.

@afern_alex What he in prior years was similar. Streaky play, injuries with slow returns to form, strong finishes. In fact, that was very much Dan Vladar's history until this season.

@billmeltzer Seeing that Andrae is a restricted free agent, and while it isn’t a foregone conclusion he won’t be back next year, how would that work? Would the Flyers have to do a sign and trade? Or can they trade player rights prior to whatever the offer tender deadline might be?

@avappleyard There were rumors last year of maybe Maverick Bourque. It may not be be him, but I envision someone similar—low risk contract wise right now, age fits the window, but high potential hoping that a change of scenery does him good.

Not a strong class at C at all... imagine that if not internal promotion would be more likely a trade. #Flyers

With Brière explicitly mentioning C as a spot @NHLFlyers will try and strengthen over summer... UFA C's who are capable of 40+ pts 1. Malkin 2. Jenner (split W/C) 3. Roslovic (plays more W) 4. Haula Not including Benn, Giroux, Johansson who basically full-time Ws. #Flyers
