The de-siltation & removal of overgrowth from Naoremkhong are progressing steadily. This effort will enhance water flow, reduce blockages, & help mitigate flooding, especially during the monsoon. Additionally, it will support the river’s ecological balance. @moefcc @WetlandsInt

I was honoured to join the Hon'ble Governor of Manipur (@RajBhavManipur), Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, along with the Hon'ble Minister for PWD & YAS, Shri Konthoujam Govindas (@KonthoujamG), and the Hon'ble MLA of Kumbi, Shri Sanasam Premchandra Singh, in celebrating World Wetlands Day at Sendra, Thanga. The event was also graced by Shri Anurag Bajpai, IFS, Pr. CCF (HoFF) & Addl. Chief Secretary (Textiles, Commerce & Industries), and Shri Arun Kumar Sinha, IAS, Principal Secretary (Agriculture/Forest, Environment & Climate Change), alongside community leaders, women’s groups, government officials, environmentalists, students, conservationists, youth volunteers, and NCC cadets. This year's theme, ‘Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,’ highlights the urgent need to safeguard wetlands as critical ecosystems that sustain biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and ensure water security for future generations. The event served as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility of governments, local communities, and conservation groups in protecting and restoring Loktak and other wetlands worldwide. On this occasion, the Hon'ble Governor released the Waterbirds Census Report and a booklet on the Waterbirds of Loktak, providing valuable insights into the lake’s rich avian diversity and reinforcing the importance of wetland conservation. The World Wetlands Day 2025 celebrations at Sendra were a resounding call to action, emphasising the need for strong government policies, scientific research, community engagement, and sustainable management practices to ensure Loktak remains a thriving wetland for generations to come. The Loktak Development Authority (LDA) urges all stakeholders - government agencies, local communities, researchers, and environmental organisations - to collaborate in securing a sustainable future for Loktak Lake and all wetlands across Manipur. #WorldWetlandsDay

On this #WorldWetlandsDay2025, we recognize the vital role that wetlands play in sustaining life, regulating climate, and supporting biodiversity. In Manipur, Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands stand as a testament to nature’s brilliance, providing ecological stability, cultural identity, and livelihoods for thousands. Home to the rare and highly endangered Sangai deer, Loktak’s unique floating phumdis make it one of the world’s most extraordinary wetlands. However, unsustainable development, pollution, and climate change pose growing threats to this fragile ecosystem. If we do not act now, we risk losing not just a wetland but an entire way of life that depends on it. On this occasion, let us reaffirm our commitment to the conservation and sustainable management of Loktak and all wetlands, ensuring they thrive for generations to come. Protecting these ecosystems is not just an environmental duty but a necessity for a sustainable future.

Today, I had the privilege of inaugurating the two-day Waterbird Motivation Camp 2025 at the Loktak Development Authority’s Conference Hall, Lake Front, Sendra, Loktak Lake. This camp, jointly organised by the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) and the Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN), is supported by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and the Department of Forest, Government of Manipur. The camp is an important step towards training enumerators for the upcoming waterbird census, raising awareness about conservation, and fostering discussions on protecting waterbirds, especially the migratory species of Loktak Lake. On 18 January 2025, the participants will conduct a simultaneous census across 50 designated spots around the lake. I was honoured to be joined by Dr. Kh. Shamungou Singh, Chairman, Technical Committee, State Wetlands Authority, Manipur, and Member, Deer Specialist Group, IUCN; Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh, Director, Environment & Climate Change, Government of Manipur; Shri Ng. Sanajaoba Meetei, Project Director, Loktak Development Authority; Shri R.K. Birjit Singh, IBCN State Coordinator and Principal, Mangolnganbi College, Ningthoukhong; Shri K. Jugeshwor Singh, Renowned Waterbird Conservationist and Shri N. Pabitra Singh, MFS, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Wildlife Wing, Government of Manipur. It was inspiring to see around 150 volunteers and enumerators from across the state come together to learn about waterbird identification, census techniques, and the ecological significance of Loktak and its associated wetlands. The sessions also included hands-on field demonstrations with cameras and binoculars, equipping the participants with the tools they need to contribute effectively to this vital initiative. I also highlighted the Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri @NBirenSingh’s unwavering commitment to restoring Loktak Lake. The preservation of Loktak is a cause very close to his heart, and his dedication inspires all of us to work harder toward protecting this invaluable resource. I would like to appeal to everyone, especially our youth, to join hands in restoring and conserving Loktak Lake. Loktak is not just a lake; it is the lifeline of Manipur, the cradle of our civilization, and a symbol of our rich heritage. I urge all of you to become conservation ambassadors and actively participate in preserving this precious ecosystem for future generations. Together, we can make a difference. Let’s protect Loktak and its incredible biodiversity!

Today, I had the privilege of joining the Annual Get-Together cum Interaction Programme of the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) at Toupokpi, Bishnupur District. This event provided an excellent opportunity to foster camaraderie and meaningful dialogue among our officers, employees, and workers. The programme brought together our dedicated team, including Shri Ng. Sanajaoba Meitei, Project Director; Shri Th. Nandagram Singh, Superintending Engineer; Shri Asem Bidyabushan Singh, Senior Scientific Officer; along with Executive Engineers, Community Development Officers, and other staff members of LDA. In my address, I emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in advancing LDA's core mandates. Each of us has a vital role to play in ensuring the sustainable management and conservation of Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands. I highlighted the crucial role of our local communities in this mission. Their involvement and timely consultation are essential for the success of our initiatives. As stakeholders in the conservation of Loktak Lake, they must be engaged meaningfully before any activities are carried out. I also shared updates on the forthcoming execution of the Integrated Management Plan (IMP) for Loktak Lake, a significant milestone in safeguarding this unique and precious wetland. Together, we must work towards realising the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi and Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri @NBirenSingh to make Loktak Lake an iconic wetland of global significance. Equally important is the welfare of our employees and workers. I assured everyone that every possible effort would be made to extend benefits within the framework of existing rules and guidelines. We must work collectively to address challenges and support each other in achieving our shared goals. I am confident that with our collective commitment, we will continue to uphold LDA’s mission of preserving Loktak Lake for future generations. Let’s keep working together to make a lasting impact!
