I like that the Bears made a strength, more of a strength, and improved the positions of departing players. Add that with good health, and we've gotten better.

Every year there are "Narratives" that go around about certain players in the draft. My least favorite and absolutely STUPIDEST take I've seen this year is: Kayden McDonald doesn't fit Dennis Allen's defense Mo***r F***er WHAT?!?!?!?!?! This is a little long, but worth your time if you want to actually be informed before #dabears pick him at 25 (if he's still there. He'll probably be drafted before 25) Kayden McDonald fits a Dennis Allen defense almost too cleanly because of how Allen builds his fronts and prioritizes interior disruption over flash. First, Allen’s scheme (seen with the New Orleans Saints) leans heavily on versatile interior linemen who can control gaps in both even and odd fronts. McDonald’s size (6’3”+, 326) and natural anchor make him ideal as a 1-tech or shaded nose, where he can eat double teams and keep linebackers clean. That’s critical because Allen’s defenses rely on second-level players flowing freely rather than constantly shedding blocks. Second, Allen values penetration from defensive tackles on early downs, not just pass-rush specialists. McDonald isn’t just a space-eater—he flashes real burst off the snap and can collapse the pocket. That ability to push the interior complements edge rushers and prevents quarterbacks from stepping up, which is a core principle of Allen’s pressure philosophy. Third, McDonald brings the length and strength to two-gap when needed, giving Allen flexibility. Chicago’s front could shift between looks without subbing personnel—McDonald can: Anchor vs. the run in base Shoot gaps in attacking fronts Hold up against double teams in short-yardage That multiplicity is exactly how Allen disguises fronts and creates confusion pre-snap. Finally, the Bears’ current roster construction under Ryan Poles has emphasized building through the trenches, and McDonald fits that identity. Pairing him with speed at linebacker and edge would allow the defense to play faster overall—something Allen has openly prioritized and Poles has mentioned multiple times, "getting faster" Bottom line: McDonald isn’t just a good fit—he’s a scheme amplifier. He does the unglamorous work (absorbing blocks, controlling gaps) while still offering enough juice to disrupt plays, which is exactly what a Dennis Allen defense is built around.
