More broadly, the findings contribute to the extensive body of research on the effects of democracy and support the idea that democracy, at least under certain conditions, promotes political dynamics that benefit less privileged groups. See, e.g.: annualreviews.org/content/journa…. 9/9

The study highlights that democratization does not automatically lead to successful egalitarian pushes as collective action problems may squander movements towards more equality. 8/9

Excited to share that my article on democracy's consequences for socioeconomic inequality between ethnic groups is now online at @democ_journal. Through five case studies, I examine how and why democratic transitions sometimes lead to more equality and sometimes do not. 🧵👇

Interested in the effect of cross-class exposure on attitudes toward redistribution? In a new paper in @BJPolS, Kim Sønderskov, @ThistedPeter, and I find that local exposure to poor individuals reduces support for redistribution among the well-off. OA: cup.org/3vP49Qr

Møller & Skaaning, two long-term students of political regimes & democracy, have written a sophisticated but accessible text on democratization & autocratization.👇 It discusses concepts, theories & empirical analyses—& is useful for teaching or catching up with recent research

In short, while ethnic inequality is not associated with democratic transitions, it increases the risk of democratic breakdown. The findings suggest that we should pay particular attention to democracies where socioeconomic inequality and ethnic divisions coincide. 13/14

Do socioeconomic disparities between ethnic groups influence whether a country democratizes and remains democratic? Very happy to see my article addressing this question is now online at @The_JOP. 🧵👇 doi.org/10.1086/726949
