4/ Our answer: We argue that phenomenal experience—what it feels like—is what gives intrinsic value to such behaviour. Phenomenal experience expands an organism’s ability to act, not only according to the objective value of an extrinsic evolutionary cost function, but...

3/ The question: How do organisms go from acting upon reasons explained by extrinsic evolutionary cost functions to acting for reasons of their own—even engaging in behaviour that may be detrimental to their own existence?

2/ « How do we go from doing things for reasons to having reasons for doing things? » asked DC. Dennett (personal communication, 2020). We took this question one step further, building on a proposal from Cleeremans and Tallon-Baudry (2022)...

Why are we conscious? Don't say "I know the answer". Instead, come help us figure out the best way of asking the question. To do so, join the fab @erc_experience team. Extra credit for a computational cognitive neuroscience background. crcn.ulb.ac.be/news/opening-o…

@cedric_p If the problem is that it is very time-consuming (and it is), you can start with Next generation, which has most of the time stand-alone episodes. You can pick just a few episodes to watch, I would advise in between seasons 3 and 6, (with one exception, s2 e9, my favorite one).🖖

I have never had any desire to watch Star Trek (whether the multiple TV series or movies) or Babylon 5. My (unjustified) feeling is that they're very long/complex/convoluted given their possible payoff. What am I missing?
