The Frishkoff Lab is looking for a reptile ecology field intern to help explore the diverse lizard communities of Texas! Check out the job posting and join us in the field! frishkofflab.wordpress.com/join-the-lab/
Very excited to see this in print! Traits do predict sensitivity to habitat modification, but climate dictates *how* those traits matter. Congrats @murrmanders for a successful first chapter!
@BrianToad@DSKarp Yeah that's true. For those auto obscured species inat is pretty useless sadly. This is certainly something that should be better worked out. Obscured data is basically useless scientifically.
@DSKarp@LOFrishkoff That results in zero observations for species with obscured data by default.
When we published this paper, for example, delineated water features were used to predict occurrences. Most streams and courseways are far smaller than obscured grain size.

Alright, someone help me make sense of the quirks of @inaturalist and whether its data can even be useful for a researcher.
People post pictures of organisms and report occurrences, but they obscure or withhold location completely...

@frogsicles@BrianToad@inaturalist Really the same needs to be done for any analysis using data collected by not-yourself. There are so many published studies of species assemblages with species IDs that are non-sensical or other problems. Those studies have to be likewise curated before metaanalysis...
@BrianToad@inaturalist I believe there is a postdoc working on methods to curate @inaturalist data prior to use. These data aren't meant to be used without curating first... same should be said for GBIF and a lot of museum datasets, too. none of these are perfect
@OrnithoAle@Appalachianary It's Bio15 on from worldclim (so coefficient of variation).
I always said I would only use twitter if the apocalypse were upon us. So here I am.
Regarding the relationship between climate and niche breadth. So much of the thinking is specifically about temperature (i.e. thermal specialists in the tropics; Janzen 1967, etc). What should we expect for precipitation/moisture requirements?
Excited to announce that I’m joining the University of Texas, Arlington as an Assistant Professor! My lab will explore how the ecology of the insect microbiome interacts with ecosystem-level processs such as herbivory. ravenscraftlab.com
@matt_levine You bring up startups as the new socialists, indirectly distributing VC funds to the masses. HQ trivia and other such apps seem to be a particularly pleasing form--"screw free food, let us scale and we'll just give you money" they seem to cry.
@mattwhitby@Goldcar@GoldCar seems desperate for a class action suit. They have been randomly charging my credit card months after I returned the vehicle.
