i have no desire to be rich so i can buy a rolex or a lamborghini. i want to be rich so i can control my time and go to the gym at 3pm on a monday. sit at a cafe and relax for an hour on a rainy afternoon. so i can cook meals at home with fresh ingredients. spend on my family and friends without worrying about a budget. that's my idea of a rich life, not the fake consumerist idea shoved down my throat.

We Pay for Streetlights. Why Are Our Streets Still in Darkness Every month residents in Accra pay electricity bills that include charges allocated toward public lighting. Streetlight maintenance is not charity. It is funded by citizens. Yet in many parts of Greater Accra major roads remain in darkness. The consequences are not theoretical. People are robbed.
Vehicles are vandalized.
Lives are lost.
Injuries occur.
Businesses close early.
Communities live in fear. This is not merely an inconvenience. It raises serious legal and governance questions. The Legal and Constitutional Dimension Article 35 of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana requires the State to promote the welfare of the people and protect their safety. Public lighting is not decorative infrastructure. It is a core public safety measure. When citizens are charged for streetlighting through utility structures and the service is not provided, the issue moves from administrative inefficiency to accountability. Citizens are entitled to lawful and transparent use of public funds. If a charge is imposed for a specific public service and that service is consistently absent, legitimate questions arise: Where are the funds allocated
What oversight mechanisms exist
What remedial steps are being taken This is not a partisan matter. It is a governance matter. Can Citizens Deduct the Charge As a matter of law, unilateral deduction from electricity bills carries risk. Utility billing frameworks are regulated and failure to pay fully may result in penalties or disconnection. The appropriate course is not self help. The appropriate course is structured accountability. Citizens may lawfully: Petition the relevant authorities
Demand transparency on streetlight levies
Engage civil society mechanisms
Seek administrative review
Pursue judicial remedies where necessary What is impermissible is silence in the face of continued neglect. The Duty of Regional and Local Authorities Public infrastructure delivery within Greater Accra falls within coordinated responsibility of regional and local authorities working with relevant utility providers. When a Regional Minister publicly assures residents of streetlight restoration, that representation creates legitimate public expectation. Where months pass and streets remain in darkness, the issue is no longer technical delay. It becomes governance failure. Public officials hold office in trust for the people. Security is not optional. It is foundational. The Human Cost of Darkness This is not about bulbs and poles. It is about: The trader closing early because visibility is unsafe
The commuter attacked on an unlit road
The driver who collides with an unseen obstruction
The family whose loved one does not return home When darkness becomes normalized, crime finds opportunity. Streetlighting is one of the most basic crime prevention tools in any urban system. A Call for Immediate Action As legal practitioners and citizens, we must insist on accountability grounded in law. We respectfully call on the Greater Accra Regional Minister to: Provide a public timeline for restoration of non functioning streetlights
Publish a status report on streetlight levies and maintenance allocation
Coordinate urgently with relevant agencies to ensure illumination of major roads and high risk areas
Establish a public reporting mechanism for faulty streetlights Public safety cannot be deferred. If citizens are paying for streetlighting, they are entitled to functioning streetlights. This is not a political appeal. It is a legal and civic demand grounded in accountability, transparency, and the constitutional obligation to protect life and property. Darkness should not be the price citizens pay after paying their bills.

#FRENCH News of French soldiers pouring into Ghana to organize stimulations on how to fight Galamsey is most shocking. What do French soldiers know about Galamsey? Why do we create the impression that we cannot do anything for ourselves without the involvement of those who colonized us? It is time for our leaders to understand that the armies of the ex-colonizers have only one objective, which is to protect the legacies of their countries. This must be in sharp contrast to the objective of independent African countries which must be the protection of national sovereignty expressed as the right to own our resources and exploit them for the benefit of our people.
