January 6th: A Punk's Perspective on Freedom of Speech On this day, January 6th, we have a stark reminder of why freedom of speech is part of our punk rock ethos. The narrative around what happened three years ago has been weaponized in ways that threaten the core of our values… the freedom to express dissent, to question authority, and to live free from censorship. Freedom of speech isn't just about saying what's popular or acceptable… it's about the right to voice the unpopular, the controversial, and sometimes offensive opinions. It's the cornerstone of a society where radical ideas can clash in the open and lead to genuine change or progress. But let's get real… both sides of the political spectrum have been playing fast and loose with this freedom. Republicans, who often shout from the rooftops about liberty, often get caught in the act of suppression. They've been pushing laws that they claim protect free speech, but actually narrow it down to what they deem acceptable. Democrats were historically champions of free expression, but now regularly show their efforts in curbing free speech when it's politically inconvenient. There's been an uptick in calls for tech companies to moderate "misinformation" more aggressively… which always leads to censoring valid dissent. The push for more stringent hate speech laws or policies crossed into territory where speech that is disagreeable gets silenced. This isn't about picking sides; it's about recognizing that both parties have moments where they're more interested in controlling the conversation than promoting an environment where all free speech is protected. At Punks For Liberty, we aim to be the loudest voices against this hypocrisy. We must continue to fight for a space where ideas can battle it out and where dissent is celebrated. January 6th should remind us to keep questioning, keep challenging the system, and to keep speaking out. To all you punks out there: Remember that our liberties and our freedom of speech isn't freely given… it's fought for every day. Never trade your liberty for security. The enemy of freedom is complacency. Keep pushing… keep debating… and never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot say. Happy January 6th to all who celebrate!

Punks For Liberty stands firmly in support of Ross Ulbricht (@RealRossU), a man who has become a symbol of government overreach and the fight for personal freedom. Ross, the founder of Silk Road, was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to double life plus 40 years without parole. His “crime” was running an online platform that facilitated the exchange of goods, including those that some might deem questionable. His involvement did not directly harm or exploit anyone. The Silk Road platform simply provided people with the freedom to make their own choices, a freedom that should be at the core of a just society. Ulbricht's imprisonment is a tragic miscarriage of justice. He didn’t steal, defraud, or coerce; he simply created a platform that others used freely. The government’s desire to make an example of him was extreme, turning a young man with ideals of freedom into a scapegoat for the war on drugs. Recently, @realDonaldTrump promised to grant Ross his freedom. We know Trump has made bold promises before, and we’re no strangers to the skepticism that surrounds his political pledges. We need to hold him accountable. Ross’s freedom isn’t a partisan issue; it’s a human rights issue. The prison system should not be a place for people like Ross, who never caused harm to anyone and whose actions were rooted in the pursuit of liberty. Punks For Liberty will not let this promise fall through the cracks. We will use our platform to help pressure Trump into keeping his word and to ensure that Ross sees the freedom he deserves. With the collective voice of liberty minded individuals, we’ll continue to demand justice for Ross Ulbricht. Ross’s sentence is a reminder of the lengths authorities will go to suppress personal freedom, but it’s also a rallying cry for all of us to push back and make sure no one is left behind in the pursuit of a freer society. #FreeRoss
