Unity in Division: A Call to Heal Nigeria's Fractured Soul
As we stand on the threshold of a new year, reflecting on the tumultuous political landscape of 2025, I feel compelled to address the venomous undercurrents that have poisoned our national discourse. The recent shifts in political allegiance—particularly those involving prominent figures like Peter Obi moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—were not surprises. They were telegraphed long ago, mere footnotes in the grand narrative of Nigeria's evolving democracy. What demands our urgent attention, however, is not the act of defection itself, but the festering hate it has unleashed, deepening fissures in a nation already scarred by tribalism and religious bigotry.
Nigeria, our beloved homeland, has long been a tapestry woven from diverse threads—Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Christian, Muslim, and countless others. Yet, these threads have too often been pulled taut by forces of division, turning brothers into adversaries and communities into battlegrounds. The current wave of political realignments across all major parties has only amplified this discord. What should be a healthy exercise in democratic choice has devolved into a cauldron of vitriol, where online mobs hurl insults, families fracture over affiliations, and lifelong friendships dissolve in the acid of partisanship. This is not progress; it is regression. It is the very antithesis of the unity we so desperately need to combat the real scourges plaguing our society: poverty, insecurity, and systemic corruption.
Let me be unequivocal: the Labour Party in Lagos State, and indeed nationwide, stands resolutely against any notion of coalitions or mergers that compromise our core principles. We will not entertain alliances with those who have occupied the corridors of power for decades, only to perpetuate the same cycles of mismanagement and self-enrichment. These individuals, entrenched in the leadership of rival parties, have had ample opportunity to transform Nigeria but chose instead to entrench inequality and exploitation. Our values—rooted in social justice, equity, and the empowerment of the masses—cannot be bartered away in backroom deals. We reject the siren call of expedient partnerships that dilute our mission for the sake of fleeting electoral gains.
Instead, I advocate for a dignified parting of ways. Let those who choose different paths do so without rancor. To Peter Obi and all who have departed our fold: we wish you well in your new endeavors. May your journeys be guided by genuine intent and yield the fruits you seek. But remember this stark truth—history is an unforgiving mirror. It repeats its lessons relentlessly, and in due time, every action sows its inevitable harvest. Those who sow division or betrayal will reap accordingly, just as those who stand firm in integrity will find their vindication.
To my steadfast comrades in the Labour Party—the true believers who remain committed despite the storms—I speak with profound passion and unyielding conviction. Our ideology is not a mere vehicle for power; it is a bulwark against the ruiners of yesteryears who plundered our nation's wealth and left generations in despair. We are not in this to win at all costs, but to ensure that the architects of Nigeria's past failures never again darken the doors of public office. Your loyalty is the lifeblood of our movement, and I assure you: together, we possess the strength to resist the seductive lure of amalgamation with those very forces. Let us fortify our resolve, channeling our energies not into internal strife, but into building a party that embodies hope for the marginalized, the oppressed, and the forgotten.
Ultimately, our common enemy is not each other—it is bad governance. It is the entrenched elite who thrive on our disunity, pitting tribe against tribe, faith against faith, to maintain their grip on power. Let us rise above the hate, extending olive branches even as we guard our principles.
