The LRF Advocacy and Communications Officer participated in the Media and Communications Strategy Development Workshop hosted by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) at Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre. The two-day workshop brought together communications practitioners and stakeholders to contribute to the development of the ZHRC Media and Communications Strategy (2026–2030). Discussions focused on strengthening strategic communication for human rights promotion, including stakeholder engagement, audience-centred messaging, digital and traditional media strategies, and crisis communication management. Through interactive sessions and practical exercises, participants explored tools and approaches that will help enhance the visibility of human rights issues and improve public access to information and accountability mechanisms. LRF remains committed to collaborating with key institutions to strengthen communication on human rights, access to justice, and democratic governance in Zimbabwe. #HumanRights #StrategicCommunication #AccessToJustice #Zimbabwe

EU Delegation to Zimbabwe 🇪🇺
💜 Celebrating International Women’s Day together This week, EU Delegation staff came together in purple to mark #InternationalWomensDay 2026 and reflect on this year’s theme: “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.” Before our group photo, colleagues joined an insightful session led by the Resources Foundation, exploring the evolution of women’s rights in Zimbabwe, key milestones, landmark cases, and practical guidance on navigating the justice system. A big thank you to the LRF team for the engaging discussion. Moments like these remind us that progress on gender equality comes through knowledge, partnership, and continued action. @LRFZimbabwe #IWD2026 #RightsJusticeAction #EUinZim🇪🇺🇿🇼

LEGAL RESOURCES FOUNDATION PRESS STATEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2026 Theme: “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” | Campaign: “Give To Gain” The Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) joins the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 under the United Nations theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”The theme calls on governments, institutions, civil society, the private sector, and communities to take concrete action to dismantle structural barriers that prevent women and girls from fully enjoying their rights. Complementing this call is the campaign “Give To Gain,” which emphasises that progress toward gender equality requires collaboration, mentorship, and sustained investment in women and girls. By providing opportunities, resources, and protection for women, societies gain stronger families, resilient communities, and inclusive national development. In Zimbabwe, International Women’s Day is both a celebration of progress and a reminder that gender equality remains an unfinished agenda. The Constitution of Zimbabwe (2013) guarantees equality, dignity, and freedom from discrimination, while laws such as the Domestic Violence Act, Marriages Act (2022), Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, and the Labour Amendment Act (2023) provide important protections for women and girls, including protection against gender-based violence and child marriage. Despite these legal frameworks, many women, particularly in rural and marginalised communities, continue to face barriers in accessing justice and exercising their rights. Gender-based violence remains prevalent, and survivors often encounter challenges such as limited access to legal assistance, fear of stigma, weak reporting mechanisms, and delays in the justice system. Many women also struggle to obtain civil documentation such as birth certificates, national identity documents, and marriage registration, which are essential for accessing services, inheritance rights, and legal protection. Economic inequality, limited access to land and financial resources, and restrictive social norms further limit women’s ability to seek legal remedies and participate fully in national development. LRF is also concerned about the proposed Constitutional Amendment (No. 3) Bill, which seeks to dissolve the Zimbabwe Gender Commission and merge its functions into the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission. The Gender Commission plays a critical role in promoting gender equality and monitoring gender mainstreaming. Its removal risks weakening dedicated oversight on gender issues and diluting the institutional focus required to address discrimination and gender-based violence, at a time when stronger mechanisms are needed to advance the goals of “Rights. Justice. Action.” Established in 1984, the Legal Resources Foundation promotes human rights and access to justice through legal aid services, strategic litigation, legal education, and community outreach programmes. The organisation provides legal information and referrals through court-based Help Desks, conducts legal awareness campaigns, and works with communities and partners to empower women and other vulnerable groups to understand and exercise their legal rights. On this International Women’s Day, LRF calls on government, development partners, civil society, the private sector, and communities to strengthen their commitment to gender equality. There is an urgent need to protect institutions that promote gender equality, expand legal aid services, improve enforcement of gender equality laws, enhance access to civil documentation, and strengthen responses to gender-based violence. The message of “Rights. Justice. Action.”and “Give To Gain” is clear: advancing women’s rights requires collective commitment and sustained action. When women access justice, communities become safer, institutions become more accountable, and the nation as a whole benefits. The Legal Resources Foundation therefore calls on all Zimbabweans to support efforts that advance women’s rights, strengthen access to justice, and build a more inclusive and equitable society. LRF EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Meet Portia Sibanda: Help desk intern, LRF Bulawayo. “My name is Portia Sibanda, and I am a law graduate from Rhodes University, currently serving as a Legal Trainee with the Legal Resources Foundation in Bulawayo. As a Help Desk intern at Tradegold and Inyati Magistrates Court, I am proud to facilitate access to justice for vulnerable groups, particularly rural women and girls. My role involves offering free legal consultations, drafting documents, and providing legal education by raising awareness of rights and obligations. The Help Desk initiative empowers women and other vulnerable members of our communities to assert their rights and access justice, often for the first time. It is a privilege to contribute to this cause and witness the positive impact of legal support in our communities.”

Landmark Victory for Justice: Court orders Ministry to pay USD$116,772.48 The Legal Resources Foundation Zimbabwe (LRF) has won a landmark High Court case, securing justice for a widow whose husband died in a negligent motor vehicle accident caused by a Ministry employee. The accident occurred after an employee of the Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs was entrusted with a service vehicle despite not holding a valid military driving licence. The Court held the employer vicariously liable, affirming that institutions must answer for the risks they create. ●95% liability against the employer ● USD 116,772.48 awarded for loss of support This landmark ruling strengthens accountability, reinforces proper supervision by institutions, and affirms the rights of families left behind. Through strategic litigation, LRF continues to turn the law into a tool for justice
