ALERT: Car thief who tried to escape police by climbing under the Bay Bridge, who was arrested in 2024 for a similar crime, is set to be released from jail by a San Francisco judge.
SFPD located a stolen car being driven by Paulo Evangelista, 38, and pursued the vehicle.
Evangelista then led police to the Bay Bridge before getting out of the car and climbing under the bridge.
CHP then deployed marine units and drones and spotted Evangelista dangling from one of the beams.
Hostage crisis units assisted with getting him off the bridge and into custody.
Evangelista was charged with auto theft, reckless evasion, resisting arrest, and impeding traffic, but a judge has set his release for Monday.
Evangelista was also arrested in December 2024 for burglary, grand theft, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, being in possession of a stolen vehicle, and being in possession of stolen property.
