Hi I want to welcome everyone to the Proving Nothing Book Club’s Intro Session Community Track (Non-Builders) Based on Proving Nothing: A Layered Guide to Zero-Knowledge Proof Systems by Charles Hoskinson. This version is designed for Nightforce, Midnight community members, privacy advocates, and curious newcomers who do not need a technical background. Format 10 sessions 60 minutes each Read approximately 30-35 pages between meetings Focus on ideas, implications, and real-world applications rather than mathematics Session 1 The Magic Trick: Proving Without Revealing Reading Glossary (skim) Chapter 1: The Promise of Provable and Programmable Secrets Big Idea For thousands of years, proving something required revealing information. Zero-knowledge proofs change that relationship. Opening Question What personal information do you reveal regularly that probably isn't necessary? Discussion Questions What surprised you most about the idea of proving something without revealing the underlying information? The book uses the "21-year-old at the bar" example. What other everyday situations could benefit from selective disclosure? Do you think most people realize how much information they disclose every day? Mr. Charles argues that "trustless" is really "trust- minimized." What is the difference? Gosh this is the most important information to use as the foundation of this Book Club. A useful way to think about it is: Trustless: "I don't have to trust anything." Trust-minimized: "I still trust some things, but far fewer things, and those assumptions can be verified." Mr. Charles argues that the term "trustless" is misleading because no system completely eliminates trust. Instead, zero-knowledge systems and blockchains are more accurately described as "trust-minimized." The difference is that trustless suggests there is no need to trust anyone or anything, while trust-minimized acknowledges that trust still exists but has been reduced, distributed, and made verifiable. In Proving Nothing, Mr. Charles explains that zero-knowledge proofs do not eliminate trust; they decompose trust into multiple smaller assumptions. Rather than trusting a bank, government, platform, or institution outright, users rely on a set of cryptographic assumptions, mathematical proofs, software implementations, network participants, and governance structures. Each assumption can be independently examined and audited. For example, when a bank claims it has sufficient reserves, traditional finance requires trusting auditors and institutions. With a zero-knowledge proof, users do not need to trust the bank's statements alone; they can verify a mathematical proof. However, they are still trusting the underlying cryptography, software, and proof system. The trust hasn't disappeared it has shifted from human institutions to transparent, testable assumptions. I found Mr. Charles distinction important because it reframes blockchain and ZK technology more realistically. The goal is not to remove trust entirely, but to reduce it, distribute it, and make it accountable. That makes "trust-minimized" a more accurate and intellectually honest description than "trustless." Reminds me a bit of John Locke! If selective disclosure became normal, how would society change? If selective disclosure became the norm, society would likely shift from a culture of information collection to a culture of fact verification. Today, institutions often demand far more information than they actually need. A bartender sees your full driver's license to verify your age. A bank may review extensive financial records to determine creditworthiness. Employers, insurers, governments, and online platforms routinely collect complete dossiers because disclosure has traditionally been the only way to verify a claim. Mr. Charles argues that zero-knowledge proofs make it possible to prove the fact without revealing the underlying data. The most obvious change would be greater privacy. Instead of sharing our identities, addresses, medical histories, or financial records, we would share only the specific facts required for a transaction. Data breaches would become less damaging because organizations would store less sensitive information in the first place. A second change would be a shift in power dynamics. Many institutions derive power from controlling information. If people could selectively disclose only what is necessary, individuals would regain more control over their personal data. Verification would become less dependent on trust in organizations and more dependent on cryptographic proof. A third change could be greater efficiency and compliance. Regulators, auditors, and businesses could verify rules and requirements much faster without reviewing mountains of private records. Compliance could become more automated while preserving confidentiality. However, selective disclosure could also create new challenges. Law enforcement, fraud investigators, and regulators often rely on access to detailed records. Society would need to determine when privacy should prevail and when additional disclosure is justified. The debate would likely shift from "Can we collect this information?" to "When should we be allowed to see more than the minimum necessary?" Overall, I think selective disclosure would represent a fundamental change in how trust works. Instead of asking people to reveal themselves to prove something, society would increasingly ask them to prove specific facts. The result could be a world where privacy is the default and disclosure becomes the exception rather than the rule. Reflection Prompt: Ask yourself and your friends "What is one piece of personal information you wish you never had to share again?" Discussion Question: If every system still requires some level of trust, which do you trust more: human institutions (banks, governments, courts) or mathematical and cryptographic systems? Why? And weird to me that that is a ponder to some. 🚨Community Challenge 🚨 Track every time you reveal personal information during the next week.
