I’m out here still trying to find a label to release my band’s excellent as-yet-unreleased EP, while the guy who put out my (frankly terrible) teenaged ska band’s music is putting out freakin John Hinckley’s album now, so things obvs are cool and make sense

People who work in media know this almost ambiently. It's just part of reality. For everyone else, all you have to do is Google it to realize the pay-per-article model has always been dead in the water. There have been On the Media segments. There's a super prominent CJR thing

Two, users tend to underestimate the cost of producing quality media. They expect an article would cost pennies, it rightly costs much more, they get sticker shock, they think the publisher is greedy and underhanded. Publishers don't want this
