As I have canvassed throughout the county and met with numerous people from farming backgrounds. It is absolutely frightening and terrifying the amount of young people and farming families that have been pushed off the land like we were. If something doesn’t change I fear for the future of a lot of small farm holdings in the county. Last week I met a father and son at Listowel Mart. They were selling off animals to down size as the son had been refused planning at home on there lands so he and his partner decided to immigrate. The father told me it’s a sad state of affairs when farmers son’s & daughters can’t build a home on their own family lands in the middle of a national housing emergency. I explained to them both my own case how we were forced from the land and into a housing estate. That we ended up getting a house another family could have had if we were allowed to build a home on our family farm. This is one of the reasons I have entered politics and why I’m standing in the General Election we need young people in Dáil Éireann that know how such decisions are effectively causing the decline of rural Ireland and pushing more and more young people in rural areas out of the communities they wish to live in. I hope I get elected on Friday and can be a voice on these issues to try an influence policy in a practical common since approach.
