WHERE I'D LIVE. 💙 by Michael Whelan There are places where people simply live, and then there are places where people truly belong. I know the difference because life has shown me both. Over the last decade, I have stared down three life-threatening cancers. I've sat in waiting rooms wondering if I would live long enough to see another Christmas. I've endured surgeries, treatments, fear, and uncertainty. At the very same time, I watched the love of my life, Rebecca, battle Parkinson's—a cruel and relentless disease that slowly stole pieces of her long before it stole her life. There is nothing poetic about watching someone you love suffer. There is nothing fair about seeing a beautiful soul robbed of her mobility, her independence, and eventually her future. Yet through all of that heartbreak, I discovered something extraordinary. I discovered the power of a loving community. Not the kind built from bricks and concrete, but the kind built from compassion, mercy, and human kindness. When cancer left me frightened, people lifted me up. When caregiving exhausted me beyond words, people carried me. When Rebecca's Parkinson's turned our world upside down, people prayed, wrote, called, listened, and reminded us that we were not fighting alone. A loving community does not make the pain disappear. It simply refuses to let you carry it by yourself. It wraps its arms around the brokenhearted. It sits beside the grieving. It shows up when there is nothing to gain except the privilege of helping another human being. As I've grown older, I've come to believe that the greatest wealth in life is not money, fame, or possessions. It is belonging. It is knowing there are people who will stand beside you when the diagnosis arrives. People who will cry with you when the love of your life takes her final breath. People who remind you that even when your heart is shattered, you are still loved. If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be in a community filled with those kinds of souls. People who understand that life is fragile. People who choose kindness. People who offer hugs instead of judgment, compassion instead of criticism, and love instead of indifference. Their last penny if it helps. Because after cancer, after Parkinson's, after loss, I've learned something profound: The strongest medicine on earth is not found in a hospital. It is found in the hearts of people who refuse to let one another walk through life's storms alone.
