Someone gave Gloomwood a negative review because of they threw the bucket in the starting pit at the huntsmen and the entire intro of the game didn't change, thus it's "not an immersive sim." Now we're considering removing the bucket. It's a good time out here, folks!

@ctdonath @0xRarest Relax friend, just explaining my position. As for how to rectify that? With the amount of fraud waste and abuse that happens with our tax dollars, im sure we can figure something out without penalizing homeowners.

Who TF cares you say it’s a scam? There is much detail documenting why you are charged that amount and what it is spent on, and the legal basis for all of it. You can offer a suggestion to modify tax law, yes. You will need to rectify how that impacts aforementioned documentation.

my house is paid off. no mortgage. nothing owed. got the new property tax bill today. if i don’t pay it, armed men show up and take the house i “own.” i already pay 35%+ in income tax, sales tax, gas tax, capital gains… but apparently that wasn’t enough. so do i actually own anything? or am i just renting from the government with extra steps?

@ctdonath @0xRarest No, I understand it fully. Im saying its a scam and should be abolished. Im offering a reasonable position of paying that tax for the term of the mortgage or until retirement age is reached. Whichever comes first.

@Lain_P7 @0xRarest You’re seriously missing the point. The loan is between you and the bank and the prior owner, not the government. The annual fee for continued recognition of your “ownership” (a legal fiction), and related non-negotiable services, is property taxes.

@ctdonath @0xRarest I didnt spend 30 years paying Uncle Sam for permission to be here. I took out a loan from a bank for the house and I paid it back. Its legally mine.

What do you “own”? The only reason you “own” the property is the government writes down a description of what is yours, with your name attached. If that record is modified/erased/lost, nobody recognizes it as yours. The price of government continuing to recognize ownership is taxes.

@ctdonath @0xRarest Anything you own should not be a money printer by virtue of existing. We already taxed to hell and back just for that. Not much to ask to leave homes out of it.

@ctdonath @0xRarest I paid the full value of my home. Its legally mine. Thats where government involvement should end. Its that black and white to me. My property taxes could be funding the local orphanage and the fire department, I dont care. I paid my dues for that.

What do you mean “fair share”? The tax payment isn’t selling it to you, it’s covering ongoing government costs. Those costs are perpetual: identifying the property as “yours”, defending it, organizing commerce, assorted other costs - most of which are allocated assuming all owners enjoy roughly equal benefits, some still apply even in the purely hypothetical “removed entirely from society” (you can’t). There is no finite cost where you’re done paying “your fair share”.

@Lain_P7 @0xRarest Remember: the only reason that plot of land is “yours”, is the government says it is, recording a description, history, and asserted owner. And I hate property taxes more than you.

@ctdonath @0xRarest Im saying property owner paid their fair share after the property is fully paid off. The home is the only thing thats taxed perpetually. You could remove yourself entirely from society and still pay that regardless. Thats theft

@Lain_P7 @0xRarest Will you give up government supplying roads to the property, military defense of the property, firefighting of infernos on the property, management of monopolies servicing the property (power, water, sewer, etc), and so on? No. What you paid doesn’t fund them indefinitely.

@ctdonath @0xRarest IM fine with a limitation on residential property tax. Either I pay off the house or I reach retirement, I shouldn't pay taxes on that house. The owner paid their share and shouldn't pay rent to the government forever.

@Lain_P7 @0xRarest 🤷‍♂️ There are several solutions, none of which are ideal & palatable. Plausible argument that property tax is the fairest, as the tax is simple as jurisdiction budget times fraction of jurisdiction land, no arguable bias toward any other imputed economic whatever.
