"Obviously they can be a nuisance when you know they get caught up near cars and lamp-posts and windows and things like that and they kind of go 'crunch crunch crunch' under your feet," says @WDHintz. "But this phenomenon is critically important to the Lake Erie ecosystem."

Research technician Kristina Flanigan @lakeeriecenter was out on the Maumee River this week looking for eggs of invasive grass carp, instead she rescued a kitty from the #MaumeeRiver. The Mayer Lab @UToledo has found some interesting things in rivers before, but this is a first!

More great research taking place in the lab of Dr. Trisha Spanbauer, @UToledo @lakeeriecenter!
Dr. Spanbauer is just one of the amazing faculty members at #UToledo researching #waterquality & #algalblooms in #LakeErie & the #GreatLakes!

@trishaspanbauer from @UToledo is studying harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. Cores are extruded 1 cm at a time & sliced with a sterilized stainless steel guillotine - samples for DNA are taken in the center of the slice & the rest is used for diatom and geochemistry analysis
