Cricket’s next big debate is not Test vs T20. It is club vs country. And let me be very clear and TELL YOU THE HARD TRUTH FACING GLOBAL CRICKET — the IPL window will not shrink. It will expand. Why? Because the economics of world cricket have already moved. The audience has moved. The broadcasters have moved. The players have moved. Only the calendar is still pretending nothing has changed. For years, people said franchise cricket must fit around international cricket. I believe the future is the opposite: international cricket will increasingly have to fit around the biggest commercial windows in the sport. That is not emotion. That is economics. When India tours, boards make money. When India plays in ICC events, global rights explode. When the IPL plays, the world watches. So let us stop pretending this is only about tradition. Tradition is important — but tradition without revenue is a museum. The IPL was never created to be a small seasonal tournament. It was created to become cricket’s global engine. This was how i envisaged it would be 25 years after it was launched in 2007. So it’s nearing that time. A proper 6–7 month IPL window, home and away, with Thursday to Sunday prime fixtures, is not a fantasy. It is the logical next step. Football understood this decades ago. Clubs became global brands, leagues became global products, and international football found its place around them. Cricket must now have the courage to do the same. Country cricket will survive. Test cricket will survive. One day’s will die. Bilateral’s will survive. But they must be smarter, sharper and scheduled around the economic reality of the game — not against it. The future of cricket is not less IPL. The future of cricket is more IPL, better international cricket, and a calendar built on truth rather than nostalgia. Some will call this provocative. I call it inevitable. India is not just a team anymore. India is the engine of the cricket economy.
