How do you securely communicate over an insecure network like the internet without ever meeting the other party?
This was the core problem Whitfield Diffie helped solve in 1976.
Together with Martin Hellman, Diffie introduced public-key cryptography, specifically the Diffie-Hellman key exchange. Before this, encryption relied on shared secrets which had to be exchanged securely first (a huge operational risk).
Diffie-Hellman changed everything:
It allowed two parties to establish a shared secret over a public channel, forming the backbone of modern protocols like TLS, VPNs, and secure messaging.
Today, it underpins secure communications across the US, UK, and Europe from banking systems to government infrastructure.
Secure key exchange is foundational. If key exchange is compromised, everything built on top.
