Later, I told my husband I would enjoy a glass of wine either with friends or at home whether he liked it or not. I noticed my hands trembling and my heart racing, because I knew that challenging him always came at a cost. “Fine,” he smirked. “Have your wine. Then tell our son how weak you are for putting poison in your body. If you won’t, I will.” This is how abusers work. They disguise control as morality. They humiliate you in front of others to erode your confidence. They weaponise your children against you. They force you into impossible positions. They ensure that choosing for yourself comes with consequences. And when you push back, they shift the focus so that you look like the problem.
