@SteveMeisterVDM Follow the advice of Cato the Elder: Rem tene verba sequentur. "Stick to the subject, the words will follow".

My advice to pastors who want to preach better is quit reading about preaching and start studying your God. When you are gripped by an infinitely compelling Subject, your sermons will be more compelling too.

A while back, while reading Samuel Rutherford, I did a running tally of how many times Rutherford (and others) positively quoted the papistical theologian Francisco Suarez.

If someone wants to study classical Protestant theology, they can attend one of ALTS's programs, where you'll become acquainted with plenty of these sources. Any of the Masters programs we offer aquaint you with Chemnitz, Gerhard, Hollaz, etc. We have now added additional courses in classical philosophy and Christian ethics. If you just want to learn, we also open up our classes to auditors. We have announcements about further graduate level programs specializing in Protestant scholasticism coming soon.

Sadly, this is true. I don’t know how theological training is for Catholic priests, but if a Protestant pastor wants to be educated in historic, Protestant theology, he basically has to train himself. We didn’t read Chemnitz or Gerhard in seminary, a little Walther, and barely any Pieper (influential 20th century LCMS theologian). If our own pastors aren’t familiar with the founts of our tradition, you can hardly blame those outside of our tradition from confusing it with evanjellyfish churches, which are way more visible.
