Attention: Magic Players with Integrity–The NRG Series Welcomes You.
Cheating, on the other hand, is unwelcome at NRG Series events.
During NRG Madison a player was disqualified in the top 8. The investigation led by our head judge ruled cheating and lying to tournament officials. The subsequent work of concerned players who reviewed the game footage make it very clear that the cheating was premeditated and occurred multiple times throughout the tournament.
Players in our events deserve to know that tournament integrity is upheld at the NRG Series. To this end, all infractions of Unsporting Conduct–Cheating will be reviewed. After a thorough review of the disqualification in Madison, we came to the conclusion that the cheats involved were egregious and premeditated, thus...
…the infracting player is banned from competing in all future NRG events.
According to the Infraction Procedure Guide a player who is disqualified does not receive any unawarded prizes. What does that mean? That means, if the player received a promo card, that is not taken away; however, any prizes due to the player based on the prize schedule are not awarded.
Because the infracting player was entitled to those prizes had they played honorably, those prizes do not get redistributed, they are simply not awarded: This includes NRG points. Since these points have a dramatic impact on a high dollar, competitive event awarding a ProTour invite (NRG Champs), any redistribution of the points would violate tournament integrity.
Does that mean the NRG Series pockets should be enriched by uncovering a cheater in its midst? No. While there is no guidance in the tournament policy documents, we have chosen to donate the prize money to charity.
The NRG Series, in consultation with Sean Gallagher, the disqualified player’s top 8 opponent, selected the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline to receive this donation.
Another word on Sean Gallagher. Thank you @Mrtoolshed_ for your grace in the face of your opponent’s dishonesty.
And a final word to any would be cheaters: You will be watched, you will be caught, and swift disciplinary action will be taken.
The message is clear: Cheating is unacceptable in the NRG Series.
Thank you to our incredible judge staff and coverage team for catching the offense and to the players for coming forward with their personal statements to assist in the investigation. Your continued support of the NRG Series and competitive magic is gratifying.
