In Sheffield, our Somaliland community is a valued and integral part of our city. UK policy must now align principle with reality and recognise the political facts on the ground. Somaliland has shown stability and democratic legitimacy for many years. Clinging to failed processes is not diplomacy. UK foreign policy should align principle with the reality on the ground and move towards recognition of Somaliland.

Israel doesn’t care about the people of Somaliland; it has its own interests in the region. They want Bab el-Mandeb and the ports, control of a chokepoint carrying 10–12% of global trade, leverage over shipping, pressure on Yemen, and eyes on China’s only military base in Djibouti. A genocidal state that denied Palestine statehood for 70 years doesn’t care about the people of Somaliland.
