This isn't the only place we're witnessing this level of lawlessness. Go to the bottom of Conrad Drive in the mornings. Go to any of the feeder streets and you'll see people driving in the oncoming lane. This has to stop!

@JoburgMPD while sitting in traffic on Jan Smuts I witnessed a plethora of vehicles drive into the oncoming lane at the Gorden Avenue intersection to use the service road running alongside the properties.

Your teams are inherited from your dad. If those teams happens to be garbage when you're young, that's all the better, because you're banking huge shared joy and a point of fun adult connection with your dad years later when the team finally becomes good again.

@MattWhitmanTMBH Having a hardwired backbone is ultimatly a LOT better than relying on units needing to contend with congested bandwidth wirelessly. Glad your Eero is working! Keep an eye on things, you might notice a drop in performance later if more people are adopting Wifi 7

@MattWhitmanTMBH Biggest problem in my neck of the woods is more people adopting 5Ghz in my area. What was a very smooth deployment 2 years ago have now become something that needs more looking after. That said, I do still have the option to hardwire my mesh units together.

Not sponsored recommendation: I've been trying to figure out my Wi-Fi mesh network for a month. Today, I got the new eero Max7, and this ONE unit is outperforming seven of these beacons on the left. Dang.

The BELA Act unpacked As promised, I said I would outline, as succinctly as possible, the catastrophic issues with regard the legislation. To say that the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act is an existential threat to education in South Africa, is by no means an exaggeration. Mandatory Grade R There is simply no money to compel all government schools to implement a mandatory grade R. Most schools within the quintile 1 – 3 categories don’t even have textbooks, toilets, stationery, proper classrooms, yet they must now accommodate a brand new Grade. Admission policies It removes the power of school governing bodies (SGBs) to make any decisions about the administration and composition of the school. That is government overreach and authoritarianism on a steroidal scale. A provincial administrator will have to approve every single admission, can you possibly imagine the administrative nightmare when you consider that most officials can barely find their desks. Language policies South Africa has 13 official languages, has anyone considered the administrative and financial issues that will arise in an attempt to cater for all languages. Removing the decisions about language policy from the SGB’s is yet another move by a government that is becoming increasingly authoritarian. Corporal Punishment There is a complete lack of discipline. We have frequently seen videos circulating of students assaulting their teachers, which is a direct result of the absence of discipline in the classroom. This will only amplify the sense of entitlement. There must be consequences for bad behaviour. Centralisation of power The entire Act is structured to strip schools of their responsibility and decision-making authority, transferring it to an already dysfunctional and corrupt provincial ANC government. The government has granted itself the power to dissolve an entire School Governing Body (SGB) within 14 days through the Head of Department (HOD). Regulation of the homeschooling sector The Department has not sufficiently engaged with the homeschooling community to identify the most effective and suitable methods for assessing students. Additionally, it has not adequately responded to parents’ concerns about learner registration and the inspection of educational facilities. Admission The Act clarifies that schools cannot deny admission to a learner based on a lack of documentation, such as a birth certificate or valid residence permit. This basically opens our schools to every child in the rest of Africa, should they wish to come to South Africa and study at the states expense. From firsthand experience, I can tell you that schools in the quintile 4 and 5 categories can only remain operational if all students pay their school fees. Depending on the school and location, these fees can range from R2,900 to R5,000 per month. When a school that depends solely on fees is faced with the decision of admitting a child from foreign parents who can afford to pay the fees, versus a South African child who cannot, which child do you think is more likely to be admitted? Democratic Alliance capitulation The Democratic Alliance can spin this as much as they like, using Bell Pottinger-style manipulation, but it will never change the fact that they capitulated. In a statement, basic education minister Siviwe Gwarube confirmed that her department will implement the Act with the “support of the national regulations, policy and standards [document which will be] developed, publicly scrutinised and finalised in the best interest of the learner.” Neither our Minister of Basic Education nor, it seems, anyone in the DA, understands fundamental legal principles. These principles make it clear that without actual changes to the wording of the legislative sections, these so-called "regulations and policy standards" are meaningless. Legislation always takes precedence over guidelines. After the debacle surrounding the BELA Bill, now the BELA Act, many of us are confronted with the harsh reality that voting for the DA is essentially a vote for the ANC. #BELA #belaAct Image courtesy of enca

@ThePrimeagen I prefer the pronunciation "seekoei". It's Afrikaans for hippo and sounds like what most people would pronounce SQL as, but this is a hilarious twist that a friend used during a piece of training I presented to them at work.
