The ultimate technique they aspire to is dumping everything (except flavour) in a slow cooker and coming back 8 hours later. You can see and taste it in every grey meal. You can hint in your happiest, most inclusive non-blaming way possible that the oven needs to pre-heat and you might get 2 minutes of it. Smiling eating boiled steaks 👌

I deeply wish that every Australian had the chance to experience Aboriginal culture firsthand. Throughout my career in corrections, I was privileged to be among the pioneers organising NAIDOC Week celebrations within the prison system. I also helped establish one of the first Aboriginal Inmate Committees. As the first substantive manager of Ivanhoe Warrakirri Correctional Centre, Australia’s first Aboriginal-specific prison, I saw firsthand the transformative power of culture. We ran two mobile camps where inmates and staff camped in national parks, working on community projects alongside Elders. I remember camping and working with Elders and young men in the community. One memorable trip was a two-week camping experience with 12 female inmates in Godooga. As both inmates and staff immersed ourselves in culture, we all grew immensely. I’ve witnessed scared boys evolve into proud Aboriginal men simply by discovering their roots.

@nyunggai Jacinta just said Australia needs to treat this problem as if it was any other group in Australia. I’m not so sure. Fact is indigenous people and remote communities have separate issues that probably really needs to be addressed differently.
