@marcustheslim @CL_Meadows 100%. Harris always narrates through the eyes of someone close to the main protagonist, but not the protagonist, so Tiro really plays this well - with a kind of "social column" perspective. I loved the books.

@dirk7890 Can you still buy toy soldier figurines like that these days? (I mean the ones that are regularly available, not old sets that are hard to find.)

SpyHards - A Spy Movie Podcast
THE IPCRESS FILE (1965) — the spy film that put Michael Caine on the map and gave 007 a run for his money. With the passing of Len Deighton, now feels like the perfect time to revisit it. But is it the best non-Bond spy film of the ’60s?

@ShippersUnbound Yes. Really enjoyed his Samson books. SSGB was a great read as well. The Smiley novels win it. But the Smson cycle remains excellent.

Very sad to learn of the death of Len Deighton, who was one of the two greatest spy thriller writers of all time and in some regards was Le Carre’s superior. Anyone who has not read Deighton should try Funeral in Berlin, Bomber or SSGB. Most of all they should seek out Berlin Game, the start of an epic 10 book Cold War series focused on Bernard Samson. Deighton’s writing was sharp, satirical, gripping and often amusing. His office infighting in the intelligence services was delicious and his characters are beautifully drawn. The Samson cycle starts with a meticulously plotted run of five books (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, London Match, Spy Hook and Spy Line) which all stand alone but tell one big story from the jaded but dedicated perspective Bernard a brilliant field operative. Len’s genius idea was to use the sixth, Spy Sinker, to retell the whole cycle from the perspective of everyone else, exposing what Bernard didn’t know and misunderstood. There is then an origin story about Bernard’s dad during the war, Winter, and then a concluding trilogy of Faith, Hope and Charity, which is not as high quality but deals with the fallout from the events of books 1-5. It’s an epic achievement and the greatest long series in spy fiction, accepting that the Smiley series is the greatest short series. Do yourself a favour, give it a try

And now I’m here. I just got off the train at Waterloo Station in London and it’s pretty much the law that I have to walk down this street when I’m here. And listen; there’s no way I could have known there was a pub at the end of the street. Ok?!

@McClumsy84 Remember that game very well. Gerald Sinstadt commenting on it on ITV. Funny season 77/78. Despite a good run in the LC to the SF’s, we never really got going as a team, and our 3rd round Cup exit against City was as real disappointment.

Just watched a Leeds team with a front 4 of Jordan, Hankin, Graham & Harris beat Man City 3-2 at Maine Road on The Big Match Revisited (ITV4 Nov '77). If Farke had been manager back then, Jordan would have been playing up front on his own with the other 3 on the bench.😉

100%. Massive game for us tonight.
Adonis Storr@theadelites

3 years ago today #LUFC sacked Jesse Marsch and continued a dramatic death spiral towards the championship. The journey Marcelo Bielsa wrought ended with Sam Allardyce, relegation and club-captain Liam Cooper telling anyone who didn't want to be at Leeds to leave - in not so many words. That summer spelled the end of Andrea Radrizzani's custodianship of the club and a mass relegation loan clause exodus. The #49ers and Daniel Farke's task was to pick up the pieces left by Radrizzani, Victor Orta and the old regime. Three years ago, Leeds were pinning their hopes on the likes of Weston McKennie, Marc Roca and Rasmus Kristensen. The quality of this current squad stands in stark contrast. 14 points off the magic 40 point mark with 14 games to play, but 3 wins and 3 draws would likely be enough. And those positive results needed can start with a win tonight against Nottingham Forest under the lights of Elland Road. When you look back at that time under Jesse Marsch, the club was in chaos: Marsch's 'pinball football', the loss of Bielsa and then star players Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, Victor Orta's signings and demeanor and the impending, inevitable ownership transition - all added to the mix. The foundations the club have built since then: consistency from Farke, shrewd signings, settled, clear ownership, and the plans to expand the ground - have built an organisation that has the feel and look of a club that can stay in the Premier League for a long time. But they have to get through this first season back, lick their wounds in the summer and invest heavily again: goalkeeper, striker, centre back, wing back/s.. etc And that push towards chiseling their name in the future of the Premier League continues tonight and could take a massive leap forward with a statement win against a relegation rival. And one thing is certain: Elland Road will be as loud as it has ever been. It feels like a very, very special and pivotal night..

It's rare I'd say this, but I'm glad there's now a 2-week international break. I think I'll enjoy watching England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland more than I've enjoyed watching Leeds recently. It's no fun watching us play poorly & lose. It's painful. Not enjoyable at all.
