Le drapeau du Soudan Français (1890-1899/ 1921-1958) "Soudan" viendrait de l'arabe "bilad as sudan" (Pays ou Terre des Noirs). Les Français ont repris ce terme (comme les Anglais d'ailleurs) pour nommer cette colonie en Afrique de l'Ouest, qui s'appellera par la suite, le Mali.
