Does childhood exposure to coethnics impede or promote the acquisition of citizenship? In a new @PNASNews article, I show that the modest presence of coethnics in school increases migrant children’s probability of getting 🇩🇰citizenship later in life🧵1/15 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

🚨 Just out in @PNASNews 🚨 Combining administrative registers and individual Twitter behavior among Danes, we show that multiple offline indicators predict online hostility: Having many more criminal verdicts increase the likelihood of being hostile online. But - against common stereotypes of online haters - so does having high school grades when you grew up. The reason: Hostility is about politics and those from an affluent background are much more likely to tweet about politics. All in all, hostility is not just about algorithms and the features of online discussions. Individual offline dispositions matter too. Thank you for another great collaboration to @stighebbelstrup and @boralexander1!

Thank you @UptonOrwell for writing this important paper and providing such a useful checklist for null results! In my opinion a must read and must take into account when designing and analyzing survey experiments!

These findings have important implications: partisans can resist in-party pressure. Efforts to foster empathy across political divides should leverage this ability to push back against affective polarization. 6/6

Why? Exploratory analyses suggest that anticipating disapproval by the in-party for empathizing with out-partisans makes partisans disappointed in their party. It seems as if partisans try to compensate for the lack of empathy of their in-party. 5/6
