@FlavioEvan @ThomasHall17 @juleplas Mary Simon is in fact bilingual , speaking two languages. But not officially as one of the two is not French. I’d like to think her language skills do qualify her in the role of Governor General. All services provided to the public by the GG are bilingual & she’s trying hard .

Gladly. Mary Simon has had more than enough time to learn French. Her level still isn't good enough to be the representative of the Head of State in a bilingual country, so she shouldn't be Governor General. That being said, for full disclosure: even she managed to put out written statements for this specific tragedy in both English and French on her official accounts. So, if Mary Simon can manage the basic bilingual protocol for grieving families, why couldn't a $40M CEO read two simple sentences off a prompter? 🤷‍♂️

⚠️ OPINION 🔊 May-sin-sair con-doe-lay-ahns oh fa-me-yah day vic-teem. Air Canada ay la por voo-zay-day. Is it really that hard? I am seeing an overwhelming and hard-to-follow wave of comments and posts defending Air Canada’s leadership lately. It is honestly exhausting. We are talking about a CEO who has earned over 40 million dollars in recent years from a company headquartered in Montreal (the most French-speaking city in the world after Paris) and a company bound by the Official Languages Act. In a pre-recorded video, there was every opportunity to show basic compassion and sensibility. Yet, he couldn’t manage even a simple sentence in French to acknowledge victims and their families, something like this: "Mes sincères condoléances aux familles des victimes. Air Canada est là pour vous aider." (Pronunciation for English speakers: May sin-sair con-doe-lay-ahns oh fa-me-yah day vic-teem. Air Canada ay la por voo-zay-day.)) I have to wonder why there is such a fierce defense of this. Is it simply because "the Liberals" spoke out against it? Has our political tribalism reached a point where we defend corporate negligence just to keep a divisive discussion going? We should maybe be asking ourselves some deeper questions: Does a multi-million dollar salary not buy enough respect to learn two sentences in the language of the city where your head office sits? In a bilingual country, should we be saying "who cares" just because a lack of respect does not affect us directly? If we don’t call out these moral errors when they actually happen, when should we? In a year from now? We can already imagine the narrative: "the 'liberals' are just inventing issues from something that happened a year ago." Are we actually defending a principle of freedom, or are we just reflexively protecting a billionaire because of who criticized him? I understand many people engage in these debates in good faith. However, I also see accounts with thousands of followers echoing disinformation and "whataboutism" the moment they run out of facts. This web of high-speed misinformation affects everyday, regular Canadians like me, you. Maybe, maybe, we should be more engaged in fighting for accountability rather than getting lost in the noise of a manufactured culture war, this one that is fueled by a fierce defense of a multi-millionaire CEO of a company that is bilingual by law. #AirCanada #CdnPoli
