Today is National Principals Day, and I realized it’s been nearly 20 years since I first stepped into the principalship. I remember as a new principal hearing former principals say, “That was my favorite job.” At the time, I didn’t fully understand how something that felt so heavy, so complex, and so all-consuming could also be someone’s favorite. Because while I was living it, I loved it, but it also demanded everything I had. Now, with the benefit of time and distance, I see what they meant. They were right. Sometimes I think about going back to the principalship. I’m not sure if it’s because I want the role again, or because I miss how it made me feel…so connected, so purposeful, so in it. And while I’ve been out of it long enough to know it would be different now, I also know that what I’m really missing isn’t just the job, it’s the impact. Being a principal kept me deeply connected to students and families. It gave me the opportunity to support teachers, to watch them grow and excel in their practice, and to help shape outcomes for entire school communities. It gave me a sense of purpose that’s hard to put into words. So today, to those of you still in it, navigating the challenges, carrying the weight, and showing up every day to do the hard, meaningful work, I see you. Happy National Principals Day! It’s heavy for a reason…because it matters. And so do you.

I’m fast. To work, to write, to respond. I am also aware that my speed makes others feel like they have to keep up, when in reality it’s just my speed, which is different than theirs. Meanwhile, I’m in awe of others who do things I cannot do, even if they take longer. Not everyone is meant to move at the same speed, and that’s the beauty of it. Stop measuring your progress against someone else’s rhythm.

This mindset is everything and it’s the roadmap for how I look at the world and my work. It’s easy to admire what already exists. It’s harder, and far more powerful. to ask: How can this be improved? What’s missing? What would make this exceptional instead of just good? Progress doesn’t come from copying the standard. It comes from raising it. Don’t wait for perfect conditions. Don’t settle for “good enough.” Build. Refine. Improve. Repeat. And that’s making it better.
