Most wickets in County Championship history 🏏 These records belong to a completely different cricketing world. AP “Tich” Freeman leads the way with 3,151 wickets and an unbelievable 328 five-wicket hauls. A Kent leg-spinner and one of the greatest wicket-taking machines in cricket history, he also holds the wider first-class record for most five-wicket hauls. Wilfred Rhodes is next: 3,119 wickets at 15.72. A Yorkshire icon, England great, and one of cricket’s ultimate all-round careers - starting as a brilliant left-arm spinner and later becoming a serious opening batter too. Charlie Parker took 3,022 wickets, mostly for Gloucestershire. A slow left-armer with huge workload and vicious spin, he remains one of first-class cricket’s all-time leading wicket-takers. Then you’ve got Tom Goddard, another Gloucestershire giant, and Derek Shackleton, Hampshire’s relentless seam metronome, who took 100 wickets in 20 consecutive seasons. Modern bowlers simply don’t live in this statistical universe. #CountyCricket #Cricket #CountyChampionship Stats by redballcricketstats.com

Most County Championship runs, 1890–1899 🏏 The 1890s list is full of proper Victorian cricket stories. Bobby Abel leads the decade with 12,424 runs, 50 fifties and 31 hundreds. Known as “The Guv’nor”, the Surrey opener was one of the early County Championship’s great run-makers, and even carried his bat through Surrey’s massive 811 at The Oval in 1899, making 357*. Then you’ve got WG Grace, still scoring heavily in his 40s, with 8,669 runs in the decade - a reminder of just how long his dominance stretched. Arthur Shrewsbury averaged 44.26, while Billy Gunn made 9,121 runs and was also an England football international - elite multi-sport talent. And AE Stoddart might be the wildest story: England cricketer, rugby international, and a man linked with captaining England across multiple sports. The 1890s were where the County Championship era really started to take shape. #CountyCricket #Cricket #CountyChampionship Stats by redballcricketstats.com

Most County Championship runs, 1900–1910 🏏 The 1900s were packed with huge names - and some incredible careers. Johnny Tyldesley leads the way with 18,504 runs, 86 fifties and 48 hundreds. A Lancashire great and England Test batter, he was one of the dominant county run-makers of the Edwardian era. Just behind him, Tom Hayward made 18,189 runs with 47 hundreds - a Surrey legend and one of the finest opening batters of his generation. Then there’s George Hirst, the Yorkshire giant, scoring 15,303 runs while also being one of the great all-rounders of the period. And CB Fry is the ridiculous outlier: 14,632 runs at 65.32, with 53 hundreds from just 158 matches. Cricketer, footballer, athlete, scholar - one of the most extraordinary sporting figures Britain has produced. The 1900s County Championship was full of legends. #CountyCricket #Cricket #CountyChampionship Stats by redballcricketstats.com

Most County Championship runs, 1910–1919 🏏 A decade split in two by the First World War - which makes these numbers even more fascinating. Jack Hobbs leads the way with 10,339 runs, 27 hundreds and 51 fifties. Already the great Surrey run machine, Hobbs was building the career that would eventually make him one of cricket’s most prolific batters ever. CP Mead was right behind him: 9,877 runs at 49.63, with 30 hundreds. His 1920s dominance didn’t come from nowhere - he was already one of county cricket’s most consistent heavy scorers before the war interrupted the decade. And there’s serious depth here too: Johnny Tyldesley made 9,036 runs, Frank Woolley added 7,807, while Yorkshire legends George Hirst and Wilfred Rhodes were still huge figures in the county game. A decade disrupted by history, but still full of all-time county cricket names. #CountyCricket #Cricket #CountyChampionship Stats by redballcricketstats.com

Most County Championship runs, 1920–1929 🏏 Two absolute giants at the top. CP Mead leads the decade with 20,920 runs at 60.64, including 69 hundreds. A Hampshire legend, one of the highest run-scorers in first-class history, and a batter whose county output was simply enormous. Then there’s Patsy Hendren — 17,879 runs at 64.55, with 63 hundreds. A Middlesex great, an England Test batter, and one of the most prolific, consistent run-makers the game has ever produced. The numbers are staggering: Mead and Hendren both averaged over 60 across a full decade of County Championship cricket. The 1920s were a golden age of county batting. #CountyCricket #Cricket #CountyChampionship Stats by redballcricketstats.com

11 centuries in just 33 First Class matches for Sussex. 💯 🙌 An average well above 60 for the club. Already 12th amongst the list of Sussex century-makers since 2000, at a rate only comparable to another great, @cheteshwar1. 🔗 espncricinfo.com/records/team/b… #GOSBTS🦈

CENTURY!!! 💯 John Simpson. Class. Again. His 11th first-class century for Sussex is brought up shortly after securing our fourth batting point! 👏👏👏

@LeadingEdgePod Fantastic. As a batter I'd have loved to have watched all the runs scored. Truly a golden decade for batters. If not for Bradman, Wally would have been far more celebrated.

@LeadingEdgePod Wasn't J G Langridge in the list for the 1940s as well and yet never earned an England cap?

Most County Championship runs, 1930–1939 🏏 The 1930s list is ridiculous. Wally Hammond sits top with 19,123 runs at 62.90, including 69 hundreds. One of England’s greatest ever batters, and these county numbers show just how dominant he was for Gloucestershire. Then there’s Herbert Sutcliffe: 15,990 runs at 54.39, with 54 hundreds. A Yorkshire and England great, and one of the most reliable opening batters the game has seen. Frank Woolley was still producing too - 14,939 runs in the decade, part of an astonishing Kent career that stretched across generations. And Eddie Paynter is a great story as well: 14,630 runs at 42.53, an England Test batter remembered for serious toughness and big-match runs. The 1930s County Championship was packed with legends - and Hammond was operating on another level. #CountyCricket #Cricket #CountyChampionship Stats by redballcricketstats.com

Most County Championship runs, 1940–1949 🏏 A decade completely shaped by war. With the County Championship suspended during the Second World War, this is really a story of what players did once full county cricket returned in 1946 — and the numbers are still remarkable. Jack Robertson leads the 40s with 7,589 runs at 49.93, including 27 hundreds from just 94 matches. Denis Compton is the standout for pure brilliance: 6,882 runs at 64.92, with 28 hundreds from only 79 matches. A ridiculous post-war burst. And alongside him, Bill Edrich scored 6,746 at 57.17, while Les Ames showed his class with 7,111 at 48.05. Imagine the totals if they hadn’t lost so many peak years to the war. #CountyCricket #Cricket #CountyChampionship Stats by redballcricketstats.com
