Historically, the trajectory was that the USA was deploying experimental biological warfare weapons over Korea, and some of the pilots involved were captured and confessed. The US government then launched a psyop claiming they’d been brainwashed into confessing. Fort Detrick and the US military had let Japan’s Shiro Ishii go free in exchange for him handing over the Unit 731 biological warfare research on Chinese prisoners (and some American POWs!) at the end of WWII, and had been running a large biological warfare program initiated at the same time as the nuclear weapons Manhattan Project (see Merck Report c. 1942). US/CIA invented the term "brain washing" in the Korean War because they couldn't fathom why some American POW chose to go to China rather than be repatriated to the US. They attributed it to some secret Chinese psychological control. This gave rise to film Manchurian Candidate in 1959
