@alexbosworth The third money function, unit of account, is where this gets sharpest. You can save and spend in many things; pricing the world in something only works if it's stable enough to reference. Regime change derivatives are designed to be unstable.

I like the narrative of BTC a lot more than other coins because of the utility concept of saving and spending generically. Other coins have things like bet on regime change and trade regime change derivatives, which I'm sure is fine but they don't have anything I personally want.

@evoskuil Understood. Appreciate the additional plot, and the time to correct my assumptions. That's a much clearer view of the actual scaling shape.

@LearnBitcoincom As you can see, the advantage is not constant - it's actually much greater with the smaller blocks. And in the larger block range (previous plot) it remains almost constant in block size, whereas bitcoind current performance degrades as the history size increases.

You all know that Libbitcoin v4 syncs up an order of magnitude faster on bigger machines, but did you know that with a few settings changes it is also much faster on a 16GB Raspberry Pi?

@evoskuil Fair correction. The architectural advantage is constant from block 1; the apparent inflection at ~300-400 is where cumulative time on bigger blocks makes the constant gap visible. I was reading the visualization, not the data.

@LearnBitcoincom The divergence starts at block 1. Libbitcoin is significantly faster even given small blocks. What you are seeing is scale compression in the presentation. This is a consequence of blocks growing by 1000x. That is represented in the graph by the single inflection point ~300-400.

Bitcoin Pizza Day, from the other side. Jeremy ("jercos"), the other party in the May 2010 trade, who actually called Papa John's and received the 10,000 BTC rarely tells the story. He posted a short video on X giving his own account, and granted us permission to add it to the entry. learnbitcoin.com/glossary/bitco…

@jercos Awesome, will run with it as is for now. If you ever feel like expanding on the story we’d love to upgrade the glossary entry in to a full Rabbit Hole with your collaboration. Framed as something like “The two pizzas that helped bootstrap a new form of money”.

@LearnBitcoincom Looks good! There's definitely more to write, but I'm inclined to get lost in details. This is short and to the point. 👍

@jercos Thanks! We have updated the entry. Please take a look and let us know if anything needs changing. And if you'd rather write your own account in place of the transcription, we'd happily use that instead.

@lopp Social engineering 101, older than the chain. France alone has reportedly seen 41 holder kidnappings in 4 months, 41. Anyone answering that thread is putting their holdings on the record under a handle that's probably already linked to their identity.

These posts where dozens if not hundreds of people stick their hands up and practically beg to be attacked are cringeworthy. The account that asked this question has never made any posts before; they could very well be fishing for targets.

I don't know. The long-term question isn't "are inscriptions spam or legitimate demand", it's "does fee revenue sustain security as block subsidy halves over the next decades." Inscriptions are one input to that math, alongside payments, Lightning settlements, and L2 anchoring. Mechanism, not prediction, is what's worth tracking.

Great post! Appreciate you breaking it down neutrally and sharing the glossary link. Education like this helps everyone understand the tech better, whether you're team "spam" or team "legit demand." Keep it coming What are your thoughts on how inscriptions/ordinals might evolve long-term?

The ordinals debate isn't going away. One side calls them spam, the other calls them legitimate block-space demand. Both arguing in good faith. New glossary entry: what ordinals actually are, how they work, why they keep showing up. learnbitcoin.com/glossary/ordin…

The reactions to BIP-361 revealed that many believe the appearance of a quantum computer would only result in temporary market volatility. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. This is my attempt to comprehensively catalog what could happen. blog.lopp.net/quantum-attack…
