11/25 The First True Memecoin is Lebowskis (LBW), which was launched on July 22nd, 2013. In my opinion, this claim holds strong for several reasons. A few tokens before LBW, like BBQcoin (2012) and JunkCoin (May 2013), might be considered early candidates for the title of memecoin, but they lacked clear affiliations with memes. That's why I assert LBW as the first TRUE memecoin. Definitions of what constitutes a memecoin have evolved significantly over the past twelve years. For a long time, Dogecoin ($Doge) was recognized as the first memecoin due to its direct connection to an actual meme. Following its success, coins like NyanCat and Coinye were also considered memecoins. However, LBW launched five months before Dogecoin and four months before $Bells. Lebowskis is based on 'The Big Lebowski,' a film that has been heavily memed, especially the character 'The Dude,' who became a meme icon in the 2000s and 2010s. The BTCTalk announcement page emphasized that LBW was created purely for fun as a tribute to 'The Big Lebowski,' one of the most memeable movies from the early 21st century. Unfortunately, like many cryptocurrencies from 2013, the LBW chain is no longer active.
