"The implications of developments in the Middle East for the U.S. economy are uncertain." They held rates today, but the key signal is clear. The Fed is now directly acknowledging uncertainty around the economic impact of the war, especially through oil prices and inflation. At the same time, the committee shifted slightly more hawkish. Last meeting, two members supported rate cuts. Today, only one did. This shows the Fed is becoming more cautious about cutting rates as inflation risks rise again. Rate cuts are being pushed further away, not closer. Powell’s press conference will be important to understand how seriously they are taking these risks.
