Democrats likely supported tax-free overtime for first responders but opposed H.R. 1 due to its broader provisions. The bill included cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, which they argued harmed vulnerable groups. It also had immigration enforcement and environmental rollbacks they found objectionable. Tax policies were seen as favoring the wealthy, outweighing the overtime benefit. Voting against the bill reflected these trade-offs, as they couldn't support it overall.

Right now, Republicans in Congress are trying to push through a bill that would put millions of Americans at risk of losing their health care. They want to cut federal funding for Medicaid, take away tax credits that help more people afford coverage, and raise costs for working class families.

Insurance exists to cover events that are random, infrequent, catastrophic, & outside the control of the individual. That’s Econ 101. But here’s the rub: only 30% of medical events meet these criteria, yet >70% of healthcare costs are borne by insurance. A hard question about rising U.S. health costs is whether we’re using the wrong instrument to pay for much of it.
