There’s a disease that affects young academy players. It comes with a lot of pain. It’s caused some young footballers to be released by academies, and it’s one of the reasons clubs are advised not to expose young footballers too early to high-intensity games. It’s called Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD). It causes temporary knee pain in adolescents between 10 and 16 due to swelling of the growth plate below the kneecap. Physiologically, it’s as a result of the inflammation of the tibial tubercle which connects the knee to the tibia — the shinbone. As these young athletes do more jumping, running, and overall playing, the pain tends to intensify. I had regular knee pain as a teenager too because I played so much football. I guess it was the disease I had at some point. Some exercise helps it like stretching the hamstring but it mostly resolves on its own when growth stops. It has happened to prominent footballers when they were younger. Wayne Rooney, Raphael Varane, Marcus Rashford, Paul Scholes, Michael Owen. Jarrad Branthwaite once said he couldn’t play well for two years as a result. It’s believed that Declan Rice was released from Chelsea when his development dipped as a result of the disease. One of its causes is when bones grow quicker than tendons and other adjoining structures. And football comes with pain if it’s around. Danny Welbeck suffered from it too. Estimates suggest it happens to at least 20% of academy players.
