Police have lost grip on the scale and severity of shoplifting across the UK, according to a new report that found crime had soared by 44% in one of the country's largest supermarket chains. Co-op stores recorded nearly 1000 cases of theft abuse and violence per day last year.

Today MPs have the chance to introduce new laws which would protect shopworkers against violence, threats and abuse whilst at work. Shadow Policing Minister and @CoopParty MP @AlexNorrisNN spoke to @KayBurley on @SkyNews about the soaring rise in retail crime.

We've been actively campaigning for a step up in police response to retail crime, so I gladly welcome the newly announced Retail Crime Action Plan. Co-op is ready to work with every police force across the UK to keep our colleagues, our stores and the communities we serve, safe.
