I think Helen DeWitt is much more shrewd than she lets on. I think she is consciously using the internet strategically to jiu-jitsu the world in her favor. For example, after her 2004 suicide attempt became public, she proposed holding a press conference to boost book sales. Her agent was appalled. DeWitt's response: "If I could have sold off a suicide attempt I would have had more time for reading Spinoza." She's been thinking about these kinds of maneuvers for some time. I think posting all those emails about the prize last week was more calculated than people realize. And it worked perfectly. Really incredible stuff going on with her. Brava! Big fan.

i rlly hate this aesthetic of like cotton kurti, sepia filter, some old ass hindi song, flowers pressed into cloth bound notebook - i call it anti-polyester
