@nickhedley Similar voting patterns for shareholders in France (and the subsequent disregard of those votes by the executives) in 2016 led to the govt introducing a binding shareholders vote through legislation. Too ambitious to hope the same for SA?

At Pick n Pay's AGM today, 39% of ordinary shareholders voted against the 2022 executive pay policy.

@EliotJacobson The majority of responses in this thread relate to scarcity of some kind, natural disasters or other external unnatural causes. I recognise those causes, but I’m personally also afraid of how many people my age will take their own lives in despair of the worsening situation.

Given the ongoing collapse of global industrial civilization, growing famine and crop failures, catastrophic fires, heat, drought and weather events, and the rapid acceleration of species extinctions, how old do you think you will be when you die?

Today, 328 MEPs voted to approve the inclusion of #gas & #nuclear in the EU #Taxonomy's "green" economic activities. If you're wondering what the Taxonomy is anyway, and why this is important: look no further. Another little private summer escapade we followed today. You have to watch them to know where they go, as the takeoff / landing info can be hidden for private jets. This one is landing in Mykonos after 2,4 hours from Cannes. 4 metric tonnes of CO2 to add onto the cocktail bill.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if FlightRadar showed CO2 per flight as part of their statistics?

“One-tenth of flights from France in 2019 were on private aircraft. In just four hours, those planes generate as much CO2 as an average person in the EU emits all year. Four-fifths of people on the planet never get on an airplane in their entire lifetime.” bloomberg.com/graphics/2022-…

Reducing routes, closing unnecessary / “pleasure” airports and repurposing their sites, taxing jet fuel and the private flights themselves — these can no longer be viewed as radical options. #Degrowth is our only option, and aviation is a prime candidate for its application.

For context, in 2019 the average household (2.3 persons) in the EU had 6.1 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum. (Source: WorldBank)

@ThaoEatWorld It bothers me more on a structural level than it does in terms of personal choice. If someone has the means and wants to do it, why not? But I firmly believe that people contributing to knowledge through doctoral research should be supported by their institutions, in all cases.

@DefyingDutchman @nickhedley You can add whatever freedom you like to the SA Constitution. The courts might make a few rare orders in your favour, if you can wait the 5 years it takes to get your case to be heard. The rest of the public administration doesn't even know what's in the Constitution as it is.

Democracy as we know it is a deeply flawed system that promotes short-term thinking (with the next election cycle always in mind) and dodgy politicians. It's still the best of a bad set of options, but surely there are ways to upgrade it?

Great article for exposing future research options in #degrowth policy, but also for its general discussion of policy mix. "Ingredients do not make delicious meals, recipes do... policies are never implemented in isolation" - such an important reminder!

@nickhedley After writing my final exam of the semester while sweating it out in 36º in Northern Italy, I can confirm, Nick, that it is very much all UPHILL from here, as far as we're concerned.😂

Today is the winter solstice (shortest day of the year) in the southern hemisphere. In other words, from here on, the days are getting longer again and summer is en route. If you're in the northern hemisphere, it's all downhill from here I'm sorry to say. ☀️
