You don't need it to be fully compatible. You don't even need to be in the same place. You can migrate, or you can find a partner that isn't sexually receptive.
Look at species that are currently dying out due to lack of diversity.

@ApoloJedi_ What in tarnation are you talking about? You combine two sets of generic DNA to create an offspring. Nearly every living creature does this (there are exceptions, some can reproduce asexually) which diversifies the gene pool. That supports evolution.

The earliest form of life is cellular. Cells can divide, it takes reproduction two sets of DNA to create a new life. The mixing of genetics is proven to be how you create stable species (why incest doesn't work.)
