Irony is an inevitable; hypocrisy is a choice. Find the irony and you find the truth.

@mtracey Two way street. Vance's impertinence served no real-world objective other than a public lashing. If the goal is peace - or to obtain rare earth interests - it wasn't advanced today - but if UA does substitute Zelensky with another diplomat USA will probably get better terms..

Zelensky has mostly been a fairly shrewd political operator, including in accommodating himself to Trump, but today he really “screwed the pooch.” He was on the cusp of formalizing a giant long-term financing arrangement with the US, and then just couldn’t keep his mouth shut

For two years Biden was absolutely adamant that no US weapons could be used to strike Russia. Now he reverses the policy -- aka, he lied. So where's the pushback? Congress, media? What could be of greater consequence than lying the country into war with a nuclear superpower?

@mtracey I don't think so - Trump is sold as such a 'colossal existential threat to democracy' that they can get away with malicious prosecutions, novel legal theories, etc

Even if the convictions are overturned on appeal (highly likely) the genie is out of the bottle. There is every reason to think tit-for-tat prosecutorial fishing expeditions will now become the norm in US presidential politics

Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche: We move for a judgment of acquittal. There is no way this jury could have reached a verdict without relying on Michael Cohen - he lied, in this case. He cannot be used to convict President Trump Justice Merchan: I'm sure you misspoke

What is the most generous steelman argument for the surprising amount of people you encounter in late-spring 2024 wearing masks *outside*? What could be the strongest articulation of the rationale?

I liked the part about them being called "Legal" because the outdated software being used for accounting had a drop-down menu for storing records and one of the options was "Legal." That was all the thought that went into it.

I went to Free Mumia rallies in the late 90s as a teenager. While there are elements of protests specific to certain movements, there’s also a generalized American left protest culture that has remained constant since the 70s or so.

He is better understood, I suggest, in terms of the all-American tradition of the outlaw hero. It stretches from Jesse James to Al Capone and encompassing the black bandit Railroad Bill and the Californian desperado Joaquín Murrieta.
