Why Does Ryan Richardson feel the need to mislead the public about his campaign funding?
In a recent post in which he criticized independent expenditures committees supporting me, Richardson claimed “I’ve done my own fundraising. I’ve run my own campaign. I didn’t depend on outside interests to do those things for me.” He is not being truthful.
Richardson has relied on a lot of outside interests in his campaign. Piedmont billionaires Quinn Delaney and Wayne Jordan have donated to his campaign, and one must wonder why those billionaire outsiders are spending money on an Oakland race. They have also heavily supported Sheng Thao to the tune of millions of dollars over the years.
He has three Independent Expenditures Committees: Fix Our City Oakland, Supporting Fife for City Council and Richardson for City Attorney 2024, sponsored by labor organizations; California Workers’ Justice Coalition, sponsored by Service Employees International Union Local 1021; and International Association of Firefighters Local 55 Political Action, sponsored by: Int’l Assoc. of Firefighter Local 55. Those outside interests that he claimed he has not relied on have sent out mailers supporting his candidacy. And he has a campaign manager/consultant running his campaign.
It is notable that Margaret Rossoff, the head of the No Coal in Oakland advocacy group, has directly donated to his campaign. In order to remain independent, he should not have taken money directly from any no-coal people.
Between the bad advice he has given the Mayor and City Council about the Coliseum sale and other matters, the billions to be spent on litigation, and the billions in the budget allocated to salaries and benefits, Oakland will have no choice but to go bankrupt soon.
