In 1998, a small residency program in Colorado lost its accreditation. It wasn’t the kind of thing that you’d expect to change the course of academic medicine. And yet, it *almost* did. Earlier, I explained how the Match started. Now, I’ll tell you how it nearly collapsed. 🧵

Match season is underway for the Class of 2023, and there is some great news for TCOM’s @LendonHall as he matched in Urology today! Lendon is off to Detroit and the Michigan State University @McLarenHealth Macomb Urology Residency. Way to go Lendon and congratulations! 👏

It’s as good a time as any to introduce myself and @LendonHall to the #couplesmatch for #match2023! I’m applying IM and Lendon is going urology, and we’re excited about Thursday’s match day! We love cooking, bike riding, and hanging with our newly adopted dog Hank!🐕👩🏼‍⚕️👨🏼‍⚕️

SO ITS A MATCH SYSTEM OK. I SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN LOANS TO APPLY, THEN THEY TELL ME IF THEY WANT TO MEET ME VIA ZOOM. THEN THEY RANK US, I RANK THEM. THEN A COMPUTER DECIDES WHERE I SPEND THE NEXT 3 TO 8 YEARS OF MY LIFE.

USMLE scores have very little to do with being a good doctor. Get the exams behind you then focus on taking great care of your patients. Outstanding patient care defines a great doctor, not board scores.

As an Intern you need to advocate for the Med Students on your service. No one on the team remembers how tricky it can be better than you. 1. Protect their study time 2. Involve them in patient care (and procedures) 3. Teach them as much as you can! 4. Never permit mistreatment!
