It’s a real pleasure to share our latest preprint- a superb collaboration with @SherwoodElegans & @j_ellingford - A basement membrane discovery pipeline uncovers network complexity, new regulators, and human disease associations.
Here's the the story-

Huge congratulations to Nikki @nikkikoudis for a successful PhD defence today! Creating new tools to study kidney basement membranes. Celebrating with @Lennon_Lab @wtccmr - thanks to @BrianDerby1 & examiners Joe Swift & Becky Foster
Wow! Another great day at #podocyte2021 - getting used to this hybrid setup! Lots happening behind the scenes- thanks to our reception team who are also busy live tweeting!! @podocyte2021 @AWolowczyk @LucyR124
Starting off the first day of the main meeting of #podocyte2021 with an introduction by Graham Lord - VP and Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Medicine, and Health at the University of Manchester
Fact 3: Adhesion to the GBM and maintenance of the actin cytoskeleton are important for podocyte health and function. This is highlighted by the fact that of the ~40 genes that cause FSGS/nephrotic disease, all can be attributed to regulating podocyte adhesion or actin dynamics
Fact 2: Endocytosis is an important function of podocytes and is thought to regulate multiple aspects of podocyte health, including the actin cytoskeleton, the slit diaphragm, and even albumin processing.
It’s Podofact Friday! Fact 1: The apical membrane of a podocyte is negatively charged due to the presence of proteins such as podocalyxin. This charge is thought to repulse similarly charged molecules (such as albumin) to aid the filtration barrier
We are looking for your prettiest research podocyte image! To celebrate the beauty of the podocyte, we have setup an art gallery #podocyte2021 with the best artwork in the exhibition receiving a prize. To see details and submit your own PodoArt go to registrations.hg3conferences.co.uk/hg3/199/home
There is also the opportunity for teams to join #podocyte2021 at a reduced cost. Where two persons from the same group have registered, a third person can register for free! Go to confercare.manchester.ac.uk/events/podocyt… for details on teams registrations
