In Heat, production designer Neil Spisak designed Van Zandt's office to evoke a "ghostly" appearance, foreshadowing how Neil McCauley's threat will irreversibly change his life. As director Michael Mann explained... "The combination of this black and white painting, and these chairs with a zebra pattern setting up a monochromatic, almost ghostly wall in Van Zandt's office is something I thought Spisak did a terrific job right here. And it's particularly in its ghostliness as Van Zandt is going to receive a message he didn't expect from Neil McCauley. And suddenly the world as Van Zandt - kind of smugly and arrogantly - the way he thought that world worked, it suddenly is not working that way. And chaos has entered his life in the form of somebody who doesn't want the money back."
