👇My tweet thread from January was on the money. Why Mandelson scandal is HUGE and impacts us all: 1. Mandelson was fast-tracked despite known red flags (Epstein, China business links via Global Counsel/WuXi AppTec, Russia concerns). 2. Simon Case advised vetting before announcement. They ignored and announced first anyway. 3. Robbins described “constant pressure” from No 10 to get it done. 4. Starmer personally texted Mandelson the night before the announcement expressing excitement about working side by side. 🔥 5. Meanwhile, government continued with policies (farm tax/IHT raid, certain trade approaches) that made a genuine EU reset harder and tilted toward US-style openness/asset flows. This is classic strategic ambiguity: talk EU reset to keep rejoiners happy, deliver Atlanticist alignment (via Mandelson and other moves). The result is Britain stuck in the middle, irritating Europe without securing clear US gains, while domestic sectors like farming take the hit. My January warnings were correct. The Mandelson scandal has ripped the cover off the strategy: elite networking and US-facing deal-making took precedence over process, security, and honest communication with the public. The Mandelson gremlin project was always about managing Brexit in a way that preserved establishment access to global (especially American) power centres, not delivering a clean sovereign reset.
