Not only has the government instituted further national self harm in terms of its North Sea oil policy, it is speaking out of both sides of its mouth with regards to its staunch defence of Ukraine, an issue I am intimately involved with, and its softening of the sanctions regime on Russia. Scandalous.

After 18 months of “standing up to Putin” the Labour govt quietly issued a licence allowing imports of Russian oil refined in third countries. Yesterday Labour MPs voted AGAINST UK oil and gas licences. We are now importing from Russia instead of drilling in the North Sea. Insane.

Each department in government will now have its own delivery unit, led by a senior civil servant. And every Secretary of State and Minister of State will be given a new “delivery advisor” in their private office to support this work. These new delivery functions will be accountable to both their Secretary of State and to my team. This builds on my recent work setting up the new joint No10 and Cabinet Office Delivery Unit. Side note. To the Labour MPs who shout “Liz Truss” whenever the economy is discussed, should note that the UK 10yr bond yield under Truss peaked at 4.7% This morning, because of Reeves’ and Starmer’s ineptitude the 10yr bond yield is 5.02% Labour crashed the economy.

Starmer cannot survive this, and doesn’t deserve to. He did not have a plan for government. He had no mandate for winter fuel payment cuts, working tax increases, business tas increases, huge benefits increases, family farm tax etc. His political and personal judgement is shockingly poor. He thinks the rules don’t apply to him, he blames everyone else but takes no responsibility himself. Hence the list of people that he appointed and then fired, Mandelson being just the highest profile. The chaos within the Government, the Labour Party, and the country are his fault. Whether he stands down today, or clings on for a while longer, it is clear he won’t lead Labour into the next General Election. Whoever takes over needs to put the country before party and sort this Starmer created mess out.

I know everyone is poring over election results, but let’s not forget… Today is VE Day. It’s still living memory and being able to have elections is one of the freedoms fought for. That freedom was bought by men and women who served our country. Even now our veterans need defending. The battles are different…like stopping brave veterans being dragged through the courts for vexatious claims in their old age. Conservatives continue to fight. Just yesterday, the Supreme Court reinstated immunities after my Shadow Attorney General, Lord Wolfson stepped in, acted pro bono for veterans, and won. We’re the only party doing the work. On VE Day, we remember their sacrifice. But remembrance is not enough. We should also honour our veterans by looking after them and defending them in Parliament, in the courts just as they defended us.
